It Is situated at the most critical point on the Anatolian side of the Bosporus. Cape Şile is the first prominent cape east of Istanbul on Turkey's Black Sea coast. Located on the point of the cape about 1 km (0.6 mi) northeast of the town of Şile.
Şile Lighthouse, the second biggest light house in the world, has a great historical value. Şile Lighthouse was constructed in 1859 by French Administration as a result of privileges given them by Ottoman Empire. It is used as route finding for vessels navigating in Black sea coasts. It is one of the lighthouses that were built during the war of Crimea for showing way to ships that will enter Istanbul from the Black Sea.
For this purpose, after the construction of Anatolia lighthouse in 1856, between 1858 and 1859 Şile Lighthouse was built by Sultan Abdülaziz. Stone part of it was built by Turkish architects and its metal parts and lens-cristal system was made in Barbir factory in Paris.
This is the biggest lighthouse of Turkey, with a situation of 60 m ( 197 ft ) above the sea level and it has a tower built in 110 cm thick knitted stones. Tower of the lighthouse is 19 m ( 62 ft ) of high. In order to be seen clearly in the daytime, tower was painted as black-white horizontal bands.Octagonal stone tower with lantern and gallery, attached to a 1-story stone keeper's house.
The visibility range of the lighthouse, in which has the flashing character of F1.W.15 sec.(1.5+13.5) (one long (1.5 s) white flash every 15 second) in the black sea region.
Of 41° 10' 45" N - 29° 37' 00" E, is 20 nautical miles.
Oil lamp has primarily been used , then high intense filament lamps work with LPG as a light source and it is currently provided an illumination with the electric lamp of 1000 W. In order to be seen from long distance by strengthen the light source, eight pieces cotodiyoptric cylinder lenses which has optical distance of 925 mm as an optic system has been used. Octagon optical panels had placed on circular platform which float on ball bearing. Fixed light source illuminates on focus and when the optic rotated on the platform, it will give out flashes during the period of rotation.
In order to rotate panels, rotating mechanism has been used and the machine which is equivalent with clockwork mechanism has been winded up with a drum. Lighthouse is winded in every 2 hours and completes one turn in 120 seconds.
It has weight that move vertically down on steel wires in the tower. As the weight falls, so the clock is driven and when the weight reaches the bottom, the clock stops unless the weight is wound back up to the top of its travel. So the lighthouse keepers had to wind up their lighthouse optic clock with a large winding handle attached to the mechanism that was located immediately below the optical system. This system is look like clockwork mechanism at houses. Lighthouse keepers still winds mechanism in every second hours.
Above mentioned mechanism and optical panels has been under protection and still using in service. Lighthouse and guardian house is being under protection as national heritage by General Directorate of Coastal Safety and Salvage Administrations.
The lighthouse is one of Turkey's best known and most beautiful. The Coastal Safety Directorate has the history of the station. The lighthouse has been overhauled by making interior and exterior paint and laying out a garden. And it has been converted into a museum in which old lighthouse equipment is exhibited. Site open, tower listed by the Coastal Safety Directorate as open to visitors.
