Located on a hillside above the village of Rumelifeneri. This light is operational. It was established in 1856 (station established 1830), in order to provide safe entrance for the vessels from Black sea to the Istanbul Strait. The geographical setting of Rumeli Lighthouse is very particular, since the narrow straits open up to Black Sea here leaving the Mediterranean behind. Rumeli Lighthouse is situated at the easternmost point along the European side of the Bosphorus where meets the Black Sea.
Rumeli Lighthouse was built in 1856 but there had been lighthouses in the same place during previous centuries. During construction (in 1856) the tower collapsed three times. In the 19th century it was believed that if the oil lamp of the mystic Sarı Saltuk went out, the lighthouse light would also be extinguished. Upon collapsing of the lighthouse tower during construction, the prominent people of the village told French, the first constructors, that there was a tomb in this area and because of this, tower was collapsing.
They revised their plans to allow access to the mausoleum. Therefore, French constructors (Bennard, Bonnue & Tuanne overseas company) firstly built the tomb and then constructed lighthouse upon this tomb (now a museum). Currently, there is Saltuk Nibs' grave in the lighthouse and it is being visited by people.

Turkey's tallest lighthouse. Its altitude above the sea level is 58 meters (190 ft). Tower which is in the shape of three degree knitted stones (white stone hexagonal tower), is 30 meters (98 ft) of height. 2-stage octagonal stone tower with lantern and gallery, painted white. An octagonal control tower in front of the lighthouse monitors ship traffic entering the Bosphorus from the Black Sea.
At the date of establishment flashing there by blacking and clearing to the light source by dark screens rounding around the optic operated with electric acetylene flash afterwards and it has still been operating with electrical flash.
The visual sight distance of the lighthouse, in which has the flashing (two white flashes) character of GP.F1.W.(2) 12 sec.(1.0+3.0+1.0+7.0) in the entrance to Istanbul Strait from the black sea of 41° 14' 07" N - 29° 06' 45" E, is 18 nautical miles.
Oil lamp has primarily been used, then high intense filament lamps work with LPG as a light source and it is currently provided an illumination with the electric lamp of 500 W. In order to be seen from long distance by strengthening the light source, cotodiyoptric cylinder lenses which has optical distance of 1000 mm as an optic system has been used. At the date of establishment, the lighthouse was flashing there by blacking and clearing to the light source by dark screens rounding around the optic light source, then it continued its activity with electrical-acetylene flash and nowadays it is operated with electrical flash.

The building of fog horn at Rumeli Lighthouse has been overhauled by painting and whitewashing. Now, works have been continuing to convert into it to the Salvage Museum in which historical equipment and some other staff of salvage stations will be exhibited.
When the old guns which are used as fog horn were exhibited in the lighthouse area, in the other section of the garden, salvage operation was animated with breeches buoy system.
Active aid to navigation, museum (There is a museum "tomb" downstairs from the tower.). The tower and museum are open to public. Site open, tower listed by the Coastal Safety Directorate as open to visitors. Lighthouse and guardian house is being under protection as national heritage by General Directorate of Coastal Safety and Salvage Administrations.
